Gun Milan, also called Guna Milan or Ashtakoot Milan, is the traditional Vedic method of checking marriage compatibility. It compares the Moon's nakshatra and rashi in both partners' birth charts and awards points across eight areas (kootas), for a maximum of 36 gunas.
It is one part of full Kundli matching. Kundli matching also looks at the planetary positions in each chart, the Dasha periods and doshas such as Manglik Dosha.

Each of the eight kootas carries a fixed maximum score. Together they add up to 36.
Worked example (illustrative only, not a real couple): Varna 1 + Vashya 2 + Tara 1.5 + Yoni 3 + Graha Maitri 5 + Gana 6 + Bhakoot 7 + Nadi 8 = 33.5 / 36, an exceptional match.

| Score | Traditional reading |
|---|---|
| 0-17 | Below the traditional minimum. Needs careful chart analysis. |
| 18-24 | Acceptable, with average compatibility. |
| 25-31 | Highly favourable. |
| 32-36 | Exceptional and rare. |
Traditionally, 18 out of 36 is the minimum for a match to be considered acceptable. A high score doesn't guarantee a flawless marriage, and a low score doesn't mean doom. Astrologers read the individual koota scores, the doshas and the rest of the charts together.
A score below 18 is a reason to look closer, not to call off a match. A skilled astrologer checks:

Nadi Dosha occurs when both partners share the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya). Nadi carries the highest weight (8 points) and scores 0 when it matches. Traditionally it is linked to health and progeny concerns. Commonly cited cancellation conditions include the same rashi with different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra with different padas. These vary by tradition, so confirm them with an astrologer.
Bhakoot Dosha arises from the relative positions of the two Moon signs. The classic problem pairings are 6/8, 5/9 and 2/12. It carries 7 points and is traditionally associated with emotional bond, family welfare and finances. It too has cancellation rules, such as when the two Moon-sign lords are friends or the same planet.
Manglik (Kuja) Dosha is caused by Mars in certain houses of the birth chart, traditionally the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th (some schools also count the 2nd). If both partners are Manglik, the effect is traditionally considered balanced out. Its strength depends on the full chart.

Gun Milan is the 36-point Ashtakoot calculation based on the Moon's position. Kundli matching is the full process: Gun Milan plus chart analysis (planet strengths, the 7th house, Navamsha), Dasha periods and dosha checks.

Want to know if your names are a perfect match? Our fun love calculator uses an ancient numerology algorithm to determine the romantic spark between you and your partner.

It is a tool that compares the birth charts of a prospective bride and groom and calculates their Ashtakoot score out of 36 gunas, as a guide to marital compatibility.
The score comes from eight kootas: Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8). Their sum is the final Gun Milan score out of 36.
Traditionally, at least 18 out of 36. A score of 18–24 is average, 25–31 is highly favourable and 32–36 is exceptional.
Not necessarily. A low score is a reason for deeper chart analysis, including Manglik Dosha, the Navamsha chart and cancellation rules, not an automatic rejection. An astrologer may suggest remedies (upayas).
Nadi Dosha arises when both partners share the same Nadi. Nadi carries 8 points, the most of any koota. Traditionally it is linked to health and progeny concerns, but it has several cancellation conditions.
It is a mismatch in the Moon-sign positions of the two partners (6/8, 5/9 or 2/12). It carries 7 points and relates to emotional bond, family welfare and prosperity.
Yes. Gun Milan is the 36-point Ashtakoot calculation. Kundli matching is broader and also covers planetary positions, Dasha periods and doshas.
The calculator applies the standard Ashtakoot rules to the birth details you enter, so the score is only as accurate as those inputs, especially birth time and place. For doshas or low scores, a personal reading is recommended.
